Bad Habits of Blackjack Players

Blackjack is a game of strategy and chance. It requires knowledge of basic strategy, bankroll management and discipline to be a successful blackjack player. Whether playing live or online, there are certain behaviors that separate the good players from the chronic losers. Henry Tamburin examines some of the top bad habits of blackjack players and offers tips for improving your skills.

The optimum strategy for blackjack is complex and involves counting cards. However, it is not impossible to master if you manage your bankroll and follow the rules. The first step is to understand the odds of winning and losing a hand, then you must determine the best action to take based on the dealer’s up card. You can find this information on the blackjack chart, which is a helpful tool when playing blackjack.

A blackjack table can accommodate a maximum of seven players (or 7 “spots”). The dealer is located behind the shoe and has a card holder next to them. The dealer must deal a card to each player and then reveal their own hole card. The dealer’s hole card is of particular interest because a player can make an insurance bet if the dealer has an ace showing. The insurance bet costs half the original bet and pays 2-1 if the dealer has a blackjack.

Counting cards is difficult in blackjack because the decks are shuffled frequently. The shoes typically hold multiple decks and are reshuffled after around 50% of the decks have been dealt. It is also difficult to count cards in a live dealer casino, as the dealers may be trained not to show any tells.

The blackjack rules can vary slightly between different casinos and games, but the basics remain the same. A blackjack table must be clean and well-maintained, the players should be respectful and quiet, and the dealers should always keep their hands off the table. Players are allowed to double down and surrender if they feel the situation warrants it, but it is important to always stick to basic strategy and never deviate from it. In addition, blackjack players should always be aware of the etiquette of their casino and follow any additional rules or customs specific to that location. This includes not leaving currency on the blackjack table or calling for change, as this can distract the dealer and give away a tell.
