What is Domino?

Domino is a small, flat rectangular block used as a gaming object. Also called bones, cards, men, or pieces, dominoes are normally twice as long as they are wide and feature a line in the middle to divide them visually into two square ends each having a number of dots or spots. These numbers, called pips or spots, determine the value of each domino. Normally, each end has a different color or symbol that matches the other end. When a domino is placed edge to edge against another, its value is determined by the total of all the pips on both sides of the domino. Generally, the more pips on an end, the higher its value.

The most basic domino game involves two players and a double-six set of dominoes. Each player draws seven dominoes from the stock, or boneyard, and then starts placing them on their respective domino tracks. The first player to place all seven tiles across and down wins the game. If there is no one to play the first move, then the players take turns drawing dominoes from the stock until someone has an opening.

Hevesh, who works at a Domino’s in New York City, describes her mind-blowing domino setups as follows:

She begins by considering the theme or purpose of an installation and brainstorming images or words that might be used. She then plans out the track and calculates how many dominoes are needed to achieve the desired effect. She lays out the dominoes on a piece of paper, using the lines to guide her, and then outlines the arrows that will mark how the dominoes should fall when she’s finished.

A more challenging variation of the game is scored by being the first person to reach a specified number of points—usually 61. This is usually done by matching a domino with an open end (as opposed to a closed end) and then scoring a point for each domino in the line that is exactly divisible by either 5 or 3. The winner of this game is often referred to as the “Domino Theory.”
